An estuary on the River Taf

Many visitors to Wales will have heard of the River Taff, which rises in the Brecon Beacons and flows south through Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff; but whilst visiting our Pembrokeshire holiday cottages, you will discover that there is another river with a similar name, the waters and banks of which provide much to enjoy.

The River Taf (often spelt Tâf with a circumflex on the a) might not be as famous as Cardiff’s river, but it promises just as much fun, with scenic towns, rich fishing locations and hidden oases for wild swimming.

Where is the River Taf?

The River Taf is around 35 miles long, cutting southerly through much of Southwest Wales.

Its main source is in the Preseli Hills high above Crymych in North Pembrokeshire, where the water then makes a dramatic change of course – hence the translation of the village name: twisted stream.

Flowing more or less south, it passes the village of Llanfyrnach, then turns southwest through Glandŵr and Llanglydwen. It then runs south past Login to Llanfallteg, where it takes another sharp turn to the southeast, continuing with many little twists and turns to Whitland.

Sticking to a mainly easterly course, it passes St Clears before turning southward past Laugharne to join with its neighbours, the Towy and Gwendraeth, on the last stage of their journey to Carmarthen Bay.

What Can You Do on the River Taf? Activities & Days Out

No matter what kind of Welsh holiday you’re after, there’s something for you to discover along the winding stretches of the River Taf.

Can You Swim in the River Taf?

As with many of Wales’ waterways, lots of people enjoy wild swimming in various spots across the River Taf. There are pools throughout the river that offer great swimming opportunities, as well as some sandy banks that are great for children who want a paddle.

As with any wild swimming, there are some things to look out for, such as heavy rain, which can cause faster currents and create dirty water. However, experienced wild swimmers should be able to find locations for a dip.

Can You Fish in the River Taf?

The River Taf is a vibrant location for finding different fish. It’s a migratory river for wild salmon and sea trout, and also home to plenty of brown trout.

Fishing is allowed throughout the River Taf with the correct permits or memberships, which help to keep the river and stocks healthy. Different permits are usually required for regional stretches of water, so what you need will depend on where exactly you are staying. Details for where you can fish and what to find can often be found through organisations such as Fishing in Wales.

Can You Walk Along the River Taf?

There is no single path that allows you to walk along the length of the River Taf. However, there are riverside paths around the towns and villages through which it passes.

Can You Kayak on the River Taf?

There are various locations across the river where watersports like kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding are permitted. However, do take care to check your area’s rules first. Some parts of the river are privately owned or wildlife protected, which can put restrictions on what activities can take place.

There is a great stretch of river for canoeing and kayaking starting at Login. You can paddle as far as Whitland (14km) or to Laugharne (32km), enjoying the peace of the river and the scenery along its banks. Check out Paddle Cymru for more details.

If you’re planning your dream riverside break, we have beautiful holiday cottages in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire for you to discover.
